OpenRouter alternatives — which one fits your stack?
OpenRouter is an easy default: one key, 100+ models, a familiar OpenAI-compatible API, and you are making your first call in under two minutes. For a lot of teams that is exactly the right product. For others, it is a starting point they outgrow — and the reasons they start looking elsewhere tend to cluster into four categories.
This page walks through those four reasons, then gives an honest shortlist of 6–8 alternatives, each with a one-paragraph summary and a "pick this if" bullet. The goal is not to push you to one specific tool. The goal is to help you find the one that fits your stack.
Why teams look for an OpenRouter alternative
The four main reasons, from what we see in real migration conversations:
1. Pricing model. OpenRouter is a reseller: you top up a balance, and every call is charged at their rate, which sits a few percent above the upstream provider's rate. That markup is one cost, but the bigger leak for most teams is paying full price on every request — no automatic downgrade to cheaper models when the prompt doesn't need flagship intelligence. 3. BYOK vs reseller. OpenRouter holds the provider accounts — your calls go through their OpenAI/Anthropic/Google accounts, billed at their rate. 1. LiteLLM (OSS + Cloud)

Pick this if: your stack is already Vercel-native and you want the gateway on the same platform. If you are not on Vercel, the integration advantage disappears and you should weigh it against pure-play gateways.

4. Portkey
BYOK-first gateway with strong observability and a model router on top. Flat subscription pricing. Enterprise-oriented — dedicated regions available on higher tiers. US-hosted primary region with EU deployment on request.
Pick this if: you want a BYOK gateway with deep observability features (per-request traces, custom metadata, feedback loops) and you are running enough volume that an enterprise-leaning product fits your team's posture.
5. Helicone
Primarily an LLM observability layer. You point your LLM calls through Helicone and get per-request logs, analytics, and cost tracking. Less of a router, more of an observability overlay. BYOK for the proxying; pricing is based on logged request volume.
Pick this if: your primary pain is "I cannot see what my LLM calls are doing" and you want observability first, routing second. If you already have good observability and you want routing, this is probably not your first choice.
6. Cloudflare AI Gateway
Runs on Cloudflare's global edge. BYOK by default — Cloudflare does not resell tokens. Offers caching, analytics, rate-limiting and a bring-your-own-keys proxy. Pricing is usage-based on the requests it proxies.
Pick this if: you already use Cloudflare for your edge, DNS or Workers, and you want the AI gateway on the same plane. The edge-native positioning is the strongest differentiator; the routing is more about caching and reliability than about model-level cost optimization.
7. Requesty
BYOK routing gateway with a focus on cost optimization across providers. Positions itself on automated provider selection and fallback. Smaller, less mature than LiteLLM or Portkey but actively shipping.
Pick this if: BYOK + automated provider selection is the exact pain you are solving, and you are willing to bet on a smaller team. Compare feature-for-feature against HiWay and Portkey before committing — the overlap is real.
8. Direct provider APIs (the non-gateway option)
Worth mentioning because many teams over-engineer. If you only use OpenAI, or only Anthropic, and your volume is high enough that a gateway's subscription is not worth it, going direct and writing your own thin wrapper is legitimate. You lose smart routing, multi-provider fallback, and the observability that a gateway provides — but you also remove a dependency.

- Already on Cloudflare for the edge? Cloudflare AI Gateway.
- Observability is the main pain, not routing? Helicone.
- BYOK + smart routing + EU hosting + flat pricing? HiWay.

These are tendencies, not absolutes. Plenty of teams use a combination — OpenRouter for prototypes, HiWay for production, Helicone for observability on top of a direct API for one model that matters. Nothing in this space is mutually exclusive.
Migration — what actually changes
Most of these alternatives expose an OpenAI-compatible API. Migrating from OpenRouter to any of them is typically a two-line change in your client code: swap the base_url, swap the API key, keep everything else identical.
The one-time costs that are easy to underestimate:
- Provider signups. BYOK alternatives require you to have accounts with the providers directly (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.). That is a one-time form per provider, but it is real work if you are coming from a single-key model.
- Key storage. You will be pasting provider keys into the new gateway's UI. Check how they are encrypted at rest and what happens in a breach before you paste.
- Fallback reconfiguration. If you had custom fallback rules on OpenRouter, you re-express them in the new gateway's configuration format. Not hard, but it is a checklist item.
- Observability continuity. If you log requests somewhere, make sure the new gateway exports to the same destination (or that its built-in observability is enough to replace your existing pipeline).
None of these are blockers. The migration is usually an afternoon of work, not a quarter.
